I Built a Gingerbread House!

I attended another event hosted by the Baking club at Loyola University Maryland and this time, I built and decorated gingerbread house.

The gingerbread house kit came with a mini village of gingerbread buildings. We four gingerbread houses that we could choose to build: Santa’s House, a Candy Shop, a Sweet Shop, and a Chalet. I picked a random one, and it happened to be the Chalet.

Gingerbread Chalet, sprinkles, and gum drops

The gingerbread Chalet did give me a few problems once I started building. One of my pieces broke apart, luckily, I was able to fix it by using icing. This gingerbread house was smaller than a typical gingerbread house which made it difficult to decorate. I decided to decorate the walls before putting the roof on. I used red icing for the walls and a lot of sprinkles to create “lights” along the base of the house. Attaching the roof was tricky too. I had to hold one of the roof slabs in place for a few minutes because it kept sliding down.

Once I secured the roof, I used white icing, gum drops, and colorful sprinkles to decorate it. I did the same pattern and colors (blue, green, red, and yellow) on both sides of the roof. The roof suddenly started sliding down as I decorated it. I quickly tried to slide it back in place. I even put more icing on all of its edges for a more durable hold.

The final step was decorating the front and back of the gingerbread Chalet. I used white icing to create squiggly lines for the base. I also used flat red, yellow and green sprinkles as “lights.” The last thing I did was add gum drops to each corner of the gingerbread cookie base to create “bushes.”

The last time I made a gingerbread house was three or four years ago.  I was in a program called HerStory in high school and we had a gingerbread house competition between all of the class years (2019 vs. 2020 vs. 2021 vs 2022). Of course, my cohort (2021) won the competition. Unfortunately, I don’t have the picture of the gingerbread house from that competition.

This was an amazing way to spend part of my weekend while in the midst of a very stressful time of the semester. I’m happy that I was able to relieve some stress before tackling finals week.
