Arabyola hosts Arabic Henna Tattoos and Stickers Event!

Last Wednesday, I attended the Henna Tattoo and Sticker event hosted by Arabyola. Henna is a temporary dye created from the henna tree. Natural henna stains a reddish-brown color on skin and typically last for about a week.

The use of henna is culturally and religiously significant. Henna is a part of Middle Eastern and Indian culture, and is also used by Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs, and Buddhists. In India, Henna is called Mehandi and is prominent in festivals. It’s mainly used for special occasions such as weddings, birthdays, and cultural and religious holidays.

There were a variety of henna stencils, tattoos, markers, and henna paste that we were able to choose from. I discovered that one of my classmates from my Arabic class, Hannah, knows how to do henna art. She is self-taught and has been practicing henna art for years. It was interesting to learn that her family is also from the United Arab Emirates. For my henna design, she incorporated flowers, which are very common. She also added some vines, dots, and other decorative shapes.
