Halloween Cookie Decorating!

Maeve is one of my mentees from Student Leadership Corps (SLC). She is also one of the executive officers of the baking club here at Loyola University Maryland. She coordinated a Halloween cookie decorating event for the club and invited my other mentees and I to the event. She provided, icing, and sprinkles, and the cookies.

Maeve made all of the cookies from scratch. They were sugar cookies, but they all had a different shape. Some cookies were shaped like pumpkins, some were shaped like bats, and some were shaped like ghosts. Maeve even baked some in the shape of Frankenstein’s head. She also used orange food coloring for the pumpkin-shaped and green food coloring for Frankenstein-shaped cookies. Of course, the colors of the icing and sprinkles had to match the Halloween theme so there was a variety of purple, orange, black, green, and yellow sprinkles. There were also sprinkles shaped like googly eyes.

My cookies
I chose to decorate the ghost and pumpkin cookies first. I didn’t have a plan for how I wanted to decorate my cookies, I just did whatever came to mind. On my pumpkin cookie, I used orange icing for the base. I added green, black, and purple sprinkles to create a headpiece or a crown. I used black icing to create a smile and for the base of the glasses. I used purple sprinkles to create a part of the frames for glasses. Lastly, I used white to outline the cookie. On my ghost cookie, I used white icing for the base. I then added three black sprinkles that were shaped like bats and googly eyes. This cookie kind of reminded me of a snowman which was ironic because it was nowhere near the time for Christmas. I also decided to decorate a Frankenstein cookie after I finished decorating the ghost and pumpkin cookies.

While decorating my cookies, I tried to channel the skills of the bakers that I’ve seen decorate cookies on TikTok. They usually begin by outlining the cookie in icing and then fill it in with more icing, so that’s what I did. Another method I used was tapping the cookie against the plate to get rid of lumps in the icing.

I really enjoyed this event, and I am looking forward to attending the next one! The next cookie decorating event is on Sunday, December 10, at 3p.m. in the Fernandez Center. This time, we will decorate gingerbread cookies!
